Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
